The fire occurred on 30 July, just one day after Le Clos achieved the milestone of becoming the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history. Le Clos secured his 21st Commonwealth Games medal, a bronze in the men's 4x100 metres medley relay in Glasgow, surpassing Australia's Emma McKeon. His home in the Sea Point suburb, where he had lived for over a decade, was completely burnt down, leaving nothing to salvage. Following the tragedy, Le Clos extended condolences to the family of the deceased neighbour and launched a fundraising campaign through his Chad le Clos Foundation to support other affected residents.
