Nearly two weeks after the southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala, rainfall remains uneven across India, with several western states still waiting for sustained showers despite widespread rain in other parts of the country. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Maharashtra has received only 26% of its normal rainfall in the first half of June. Meanwhile, satellite imagery indicates that while the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon is active over eastern and northeastern India, the Arabian Sea branch has weakened, leading to intermittent rainfall across western India instead of continuous downpours.

India faces a 28% rainfall deficit this monsoon season, with unusual atmospheric patterns hindering cloud movement and widespread rain, according to IMD data from June 4-14.

Monsoon progress is hindered by dry westerlies, but a seasonal trough hints at potential rain revival along the west coast.

India has received 50.3 mm rain from June 1 to June 16, the 34th lowest rainfall for this period since 1901.

Forecasts suggest expected revival of rains next week could remain uneven and intermittent initially, offering only limited respite from prevailing conditions
