Her family announced on Friday 22 May that she passed away on Thursday evening, having lived with Alzheimer’s disease in her final years and experiencing a recent decline in health. Chalmers began her broadcasting career with the BBC at just 13, going on to present shows like Family Favourites before becoming a household name as the host of Wish You Were Here...? from 1974 until 2003. She famously revealed in 2008 that she always “went commando” while filming the travel series to avoid visible panty lines on television. Appointed an OBE in 1994, Chalmers is survived by her husband, former sports commentator Neil Durden-Smith, and their two children, and was known for her passion for travel and family.
