The outbreak involves a rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has reportedly claimed over 130 lives and led to nearly 600 suspected cases, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency. Despite the cancellation of the Kinshasa stage, the team's scheduled World Cup warm-up matches against Denmark in Belgium and Chile in Spain will proceed as planned. Most of Congo's players and their French coach are based outside the central African country, with team staff currently in Congo set to depart shortly. Football's global governing body, Fifa, is monitoring the situation and communicating with the Congo DR Football Association to ensure the team is aware of all medical and security guidance for the tournament.
