The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern over an Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda, following more than 300 suspected infections and at least 88 deaths. The decision was announced on Sunday, with WHO clarifying that while the situation is severe, it does not meet the threshold of a pandemic-level emergency such as COVID-19.

Some 88 people have died from the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever in the DR Congo, with one death in Uganda, and at least 336 suspected cases.

Officials suspect the disease has caused 80 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo so far.
