President Konstantinos Tassoulas has inaugurated a new museum dedicated to Georgios Papanikolaou (1883-1962), who invented the Pap smear for the detection of cervical cancer.
“Few people in history can claim to have given millions of their fellow human beings the most precious commodity – life – as Papanikolaou did. The method that bears his name, the Pap smear, revolutionized the early diagnosis of cancer. It has saved, and continues to save, countless lives of women in every corner of the globe,” Tassoulas said at the museum, located in the physician’s native town of Kymi, Evia.
The president said that, after completing his studies abroad, Papanikolaou “returned to Kymi as a young doctor, with his degree barely in hand, and cared for patients with affection.”
