A museum dedicated to Dr Georgios Papanikolaou, inventor of the Pap test for cervical cancer detection, opens September 11 in his childhood home of Kymi, Greece’s Evia region. The museum traces his school years, doctoral studies in Germany and his 1913 immigration to the US, where he worked for 47 years at Cornell University. Curator Iliana Zioga said letters challenge assumptions that his wealthy background made his discovery easy: “We have many letters in which he desperately asks for money.”
