Maccain said the engagement became necessary following the shutdown of some USAID programmes by the United States Government in 2025.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have agreed to strengthen collaboration in investigating the alleged diversion and mismanagement of funds provided under United States government-supported programmes in Nigeria.
The decision was reached on Thursday, September 10, 2026, when Marcus Maccain, Assistant Law Enforcement Attaché of the FBI, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the office of the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo.
Speaking during the meeting, Maccain said the visit was aimed at strengthening cooperation in investigating alleged financial irregularities involving organisations that received funds under programmes supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
He said the investigation would particularly focus on programmes connected with HIV and tuberculosis interventions.
