The publication's 2026 Top Picks list, released in February, distills that testing into 10 winners. There is one winner for each major vehicle category, from small cars and midsized SUVs to full-sized pickups and the year's best electric vehicle. Instead of parsing owner surveys, crash-test ratings, and acceleration numbers themselves, they can see which single model in each segment already cleared every hurdle CR uses to judge a vehicle.
What stands out most in the 2026 results is not any single winner. It is a pattern across the entire list. For the first time, every model on Consumer Reports' Top Picks roster is available as a hybrid, or it is sold exclusively as one. In most categories, the electrified version is also the one CR recommends most strongly. That is not a coincidence. Hybrid powertrains have matured to the point where they routinely beat their gas-only counterparts on both fuel economy and everyday drivability. CR's testing also turned up quieter cabins and smoother power delivery across several of this year's picks.
