In a candid interview following public uproar, South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Professor Anil Sooklal, has finally broken his silence over a photograph taken two months ago.
The image, showcasing Sooklal alongside former president Jacob Zuma and businessman Ajay Gupta at a temple in India, ignited fierce debates and demands for an investigation into his conduct. Gupta was accused of playing a central role in South Africa's state capture scandal.
Sooklal spoke to the POST after the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed last week that it had concluded its internal consultations with him over Zuma’s private visit to India in June.
According to a statement by DIRCO, the Presidency informed the department of Zuma’s planned private visit and requested assistance with the necessary protocol and logistical arrangements.
