Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube
The Department of Basic Education cannot provide verified provincial figures showing how many educators and other school personnel have been vetted against South Africa’s two child-protection registers since 2019.
The revelation was made by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube when she was responding to parliamentary questions from DA MP Ciska Jordaan, who wanted to know what measures her department was using to ensure all educators and other personnel at schools were vetted.
In her response, Gwarube said the department advised her that it did not have verified year-by-year provincial information on the number of names of teachers added or removed from the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO) or number of teachers who have been vetted and registered by the South African Council of Educators (SACE) .
She said the NRSO was administered by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
