Volvo has given three of its most familiar models a mid-life makeover, with the XC40 and all-electric EX40 and EC40 pair all getting fresh styling, a bigger infotainment screen and a major upgrade to their safety and driver-assistance tech.The changes are designed to keep Volvo’s compact 40-series models fresh, with the updates stretching well beyond the usual new wheels and paint colours. There are changes to the bodywork at both ends, a new generation of sensors and cameras, Google’s Gemini AI assistant built in and a revised interior with more trim choices.The most obvious changes are at the front, where all three models get a new interpretation of Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer headlights using Matrix LED technology. There’s also a redesigned grille, front bumper, bonnet and front wings, while retaining the familiar Volvo family look.The Volvo EC40 mirrors the changes to the EX40 but gets a sleeker rear end (Volvo)Changes at the back depend on which model you choose. The XC40 and EX40 get new LED rear lights, a revised tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper, while the sleeker EC40 keeps its existing rear-end design. Inside, the biggest change is a new 11.2-inch central touchscreen, which Volvo says is larger, sharper and quicker to use. The software has also been redesigned so key functions need fewer taps, which should make everyday tasks such as changing settings or finding features more straightforward.Google Gemini is another big addition. Volvo is bringing Google’s latest AI assistant into the 40-series cars, allowing drivers to use more natural language when talking to the car. It can help with journey planning, suggest places to stop and deal with messages while you’re on the move, although the availability of some connected features will vary by market, depend on connectivity and may require customers to opt in.The safety hardware gets a substantial upgrade. The new 40-series cars receive a new software and sensor platform using new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras. Together, they give the cars a more complete view of what’s happening around them and support several new or improved safety systems.Door Opening Alert is added to warn occupants if they’re about to open a door into the path of a cyclist or other road user. Optional Pilot Assist is also upgraded with lane-change assistance and smoother operation, while the optional 360-degree camera now gets a 3D view to make parking and low-speed manoeuvres easier.The cars can also use automatic emergency steering and automatic emergency braking if a possible collision is detected, either warning the driver or stepping in to try to avoid an impact or reduce its severity.Volvo EX40 and EC40 models both get bigger screens with updated tech including Gemini AI assistance (Volvo)“By enhancing the design, technology and safety features of our 40 series cars’, we've created the best versions of our 40 series yet,” says Akhil Krishnan, Interim lead for the 30 and 40 series at Volvo Cars. “These already popular models are now set to continue being among our best-selling cars for years to come.”The EX40 and EC40 continue as the fully electric choices in the line-up. Volvo says the EX40 offers a maximum claimed range of up to 357 miles, while the slightly more aerodynamic EC40 manages 363 miles.All three models will continue to receive over-the-air software updates, meaning new software and features can be added through their data connect after the cars have left the factory.Order books for the updated XC40, EX40 and EC40, including Black Edition versions, are now open, with production due to begin later this autumn. Prices shouldn’t be too far away from today’s starting price of £42,360 for the EX40.
