The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and key stakeholders in Nigeria’s transportation sector have launched a national campaign to end vehicle overloading and unsafe loading practices, warning that the menace poses a serious threat to lives, road infrastructure, logistics and the nation’s economy.
The stakeholders, comprising government agencies, transport operators, cargo owners, regulators, security agencies, civil society organisations and other players across the transportation value chain, also adopted the Abuja Declaration 2026, committing themselves to coordinated action to eliminate overloading and promote safer road transportation.
At the National Breakfast Policy Dialogue held in Abuja on Thursday, stakeholders urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive national action against overloading, just as his administration took a bold decision to end the petrol subsidy regime.
They called on the President to make the declaration that “overloading is gone”, arguing that only a strong, coordinated national policy backed by sustained enforcement, political will and stakeholder cooperation can permanently address the problem.
The dialogue, convened in partnership with BusinessDay Media Limited, was themed: “Ending Overloading, Saving Lives: A National Commitment to Safer Roads and Responsible Transportation in Nigeria.”
