A software glitch in the regenerative braking system can overcharge the battery and shut down the electric drive system while driving

Toyota $TM is recalling approximately 10,000 2026 C-HR electric vehicles in North America after a software defect was found to cause a loss of drive power while driving, the company said.
At the center of the issue is the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit, the component responsible for managing how the vehicle's regenerative braking interacts with the high-voltage battery. If the battery is nearly or fully charged during driving, the regenerative braking process can force more energy into it than it can safely accept, causing the electric drive system to cut out. "A loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash," Toyota said in a statement.
