Police in Athens have broken up an alleged criminal group accused of posing as electricity company employees to gain access to homes and steal cash and valuables, authorities said Thursday.
Two suspects, ages 18 and 16, were arrested during an operation in Fyli, western Attica, while six other alleged members of the group have been identified.
Police have linked the group to 34 thefts and fraud cases since December 2025, with the total proceeds estimated at more than €250,000.
According to investigators, members traveled in a rented vehicle and approached residents claiming to work for an electricity provider. They allegedly warned victims of fictitious electricity leaks – and in some cases even radiation leaks – to persuade them to allow them inside their homes.
Once inside, they allegedly stole cash, jewelry and other valuables. In one case in Oropos in December, the suspects allegedly stole about €3,000 in cash and valuables from minors.
