The moment came in the 71st minute of a UEFA Champions League match against Feyenoord, when first-choice captain Raphinha handed over the armband. The match finished 5-1. Six minutes after receiving the armband, Yamal buried a direct free-kick to add his name to the scoresheet.
A record that stood for 16 years
The previous youngest-captain mark belonged to Bojan Krkić, who wore the armband at 20 years and 56 days back in 2010. Yamal shattered it by nearly a full year. At 19 years and 58 days, he didn’t just inch past the milestone. He lapped it.
