A UK travel agent has gone bust after nearly 20 years in business, in what is proving a nightmare year for the holiday industry.Barnes Worldwide Travel first opened in 2007 as an independent travel agent based in Liverpool but ceased trading on September 9th and has become the latest victim in an increasingly precarious environment for holiday companies. The firm had offered trips to destinations across the globe including Turkey, Goa, Spain, Japan and America. The Abta-bonded travel agent's website has already been taken down, with the travel body advising customers who booked trips through them to check their paperwork.'If you booked a flight-inclusive holiday, the tour operator or other principal travel business will be named on your ATOL Certificate under “Who is protecting your trip”,' the travel trade association said.Abta also recommended contacting the 'credit control department of your tour operator or other principal travel business with whom you have a contract' to ensure holidays go ahead as planned. After almost twenty years of sending tourists to destinations including Turkey (pictured), Goa and Spain, Barnes Worldwide Travel announced it was closing this week 'Your booking should continue as normal, and they will be your direct point of contact,' it continued. Barnes Worldwide Travel Ltd isn't the only independent agent to go bust this year however - 2026 is proving particularly tough for the industry. Here's the other travel companies that have fallen victim to the difficult current climate... Regen CentralOn January 13, Regen Central Ltd ceased trading after 17 years of selling flights and hotel packages.The company was founded in 2009 in Hertfordshire and previously operated in Europe, South East Asia and the Middle East.Based in London, it also traded under the names One Haji and Umrah, Regen Travels and Oneworld Travels. It also ran operations through its websites regentravels.com, oneworld-travels.com and onehajjumrah.com.Simply Florida TravelMeanwhile, Simply Florida Travel Ltd ceased trading as an Air Travel Organiser's Licence (ATOL) holder on January 20 of this year. Based in Glasgow, the company traded under the name Simply Florida Travel and also operated through its website www.simplyfloridatravel.com.The company's destinations included Disneyland, Disney World, Universal Studios, New York, Toronto and Niagara Falls, as well as cruises. Simply Florida Travel filed to be struck off the register on October 13, 2025, according to Companies House records.It was then dissolved on January 6, 2026. It ceased trading as an ATOL holder on January 20.Asiara UK Asiara UK Ltd ceased trading as an ATOL holder on January 21 and all tours and flights with the company were cancelled as a result.It comes after the brand, which ran tailor-made and small-group tours to countries including Thailand, China, India, Japan and Singapore, dissolved earlier in the month.On the Civil Aviation Authority’s ATOL failures page, it said the company – which was based in Ipswich – traded under the names Asiara Holidays and the website www.asiara-holidays.com. Other travel agents have closed their doors this year too, including Simply Florida Travel Ltd which offered trips to Disney World amongst other placesGold Crest HolidaysGold Crest Holidays, based in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, confirmed it stopped trading with immediate effect on January 23 and entered voluntary liquidation. The family-owned coach tour operator specialised in trips to destinations like Disneyland Paris, European city breaks and major sporting events.At the time, the company's website read: 'After more than 30 years of creating unforgettable holidays, we are deeply saddened to announce that Gold Crest Holidays has ceased trading with immediate effect and has taken steps to enter voluntary liquidation.'This difficult decision follows the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, strategic changes in key partner arrangements that adversely affected our business, and a challenging trading environment with significantly rising costs.'We are immensely grateful to our loyal customers, travel agents, suppliers, and dedicated staff for your support over the years. We are truly sorry we can no longer continue.'Travel Bespoke After 15 years of operation, Travel Bespoke Ltd ceased trading as an ATOL holder on May 29. The company, which was previously based in Midhurst, specialised in ski and spa holidays, offering flights and package trips.CEO Andrew Valentine said in a statement: 'For nearly three decades, GVI has been far more than just an organisation. It has been a global family with a shared vision, dedicated to making a sustainable difference in our world. 'It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I write to share that GVI is today closing its doors.'This is a deeply sad conclusion to a remarkable journey, but as we navigate this final chapter, we look back with immense pride and gratitude for everything we achieved together.' Travel Bespoke Ltd ceased trading earlier this year and specialised in ski and spa holidaysSki YodlFounded in 2018, Ski Yodl Ltd voluntarily entered liquidation in July. The Norwich-based company previously offered ski holiday packages to destinations such as the French Alps.Wayfairer Travel Wayfairer Travel previously specialised in package holidays to a range of destinations, from Africa to Asia, Europe and the Middle East.It offered trips including safari holidays, adventure-focused getaways and luxury alternatives. However, the company, which was founded in 2012, recently announced it would be closing its doors 'until further notice'.A statement from the company said: 'We are truly sorry for the concern and uncertainty caused by the current situation.'Wayfairer Travel has currently suspended all services until further notice.'At this stage, we are unable to provide further information until we have received the appropriate accounting and legal advice.'These discussions are currently under way, and we expect to provide a formal update during the week commencing 31 August.'We appreciate your patience and sincerely apologise that we cannot provide greater clarity at this time.'
