EPFL Direction has renewed the EPFL+ECAL Lab for the 2027–2030 period to better integrate society’s needs, behaviors and expectations into the development of new technologies. As of January 1, 2027, it will become the EPFL+ECAL Center.Bringing a new technology to users requires understanding how it will be used, by whom and in what context. This is the role of human-centered design, which takes people’s needs and behaviors into account from the very beginning of the design process. Renewed for the 2027–2030 period, the EPFL+ECAL Lab is tasked with developing methods, tools and expertise in this field. It will become the EPFL+ECAL Center on January 1, 2027 to better reflect its role within EPFL. Its expertise will contribute to education on campus, support laboratories in projects with societal impact, and foster EPFL’s collaborations with the Canton of Vaud and its Swiss partners.EPFL laboratories can draw on this expertise when preparing project proposals, ensuring that user needs and behaviors are considered from the outset. The Center can then take responsibility for the project components related specifically to human-centered design. Its facilities and activities will remain at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) in Renens, maintaining its close ties with the design community.© EPFL+ECAL Lab / Ambrosetti & Droz
