Public health authorities have recorded 34 new West Nile virus cases in the past week and warned of unusually intense transmission in the Attica region, which includes Athens.
The new infections bring the number of locally acquired cases this year to 324, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said in its weekly bulletin on Thursday. Thirty people infected with the virus have died, all of them over 65.
Of the cases reported through September 9, 217 patients developed neurological complications, including encephalitis or meningitis, while 107 experienced milder symptoms.
Cases have been recorded in 73 municipalities across 22 regional units. EODY said Attica has seen a particularly high number of infections this year compared with previous years.
Authorities have also designated several municipalities as high-risk despite no human cases being reported there so far.
