A significant increase in West Nile virus infections is being recorded in Greece, with 45 new locally acquired cases reported over the past week, bringing the total number to 110 since the start of the 2026 season through 12 August.
Of these, 81 patients developed severe central nervous system manifestations, while nine deaths have also been recorded, all among patients aged over 65. The figures highlight the continued circulation of the virus and the need for increased vigilance, particularly among vulnerable groups.
According to the National Public Health Organisation (EODY), cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded and investigated in 39 municipalities across 14 regional units in the regions of Attica, Thessaly, Central Macedonia and the Peloponnese. Specifically, cases have been reported in the regional units of East and West Attica, North, Central and South Athens, Piraeus, Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Pella, Serres and Laconia.
Further cases are expected in the coming period, both in the areas already affected and in new areas.
