President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska arrived in Canada late Wednesday, Sept. 9, for a three-day visit focused on strengthening defense, economic and energy cooperation between Kyiv and Ottawa. The talks will focus on expanding cooperation in defense, the economy and energy, while also addressing the human toll of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Carney’s office said. Zelensky said before the trip that he planned to discuss ballistic missile defense with Canadian officials. He has described ballistic defense as one of Ukraine’s key vulnerabilities as Russia continues its long-range missile and drone attacks. Kyiv is also seeking to develop its own ballistic missile defense capabilities, Zelensky said. The Canadian visit follows Zelensky’s trip to Norway, where he attended the funeral of King Harald V and met Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to discuss air defense and preparations for the coming winter. Støre later said Zelensky’s plane narrowly avoided a drone while taking off from Moldova en route to Norway. Zelensky also met Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir on Sept. 9, with talks focusing on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and preparations for winter.
