When Nottingham Forest searched for another wing-back, the club and head coach Oliver Glasner wanted someone similar to Daniel Munoz.Glasner knew the Colombian was the perfect fit for his brand of football, but with Forest’s strained relationship with Palace, a move was not considered realistic. So when it became apparent Palace might sell, Forest acted swiftly. Munoz has the quality to change the dynamic at Forest — but that might apply to one man more than most.Ola Aina had to fight for his place when he joined as a free agent in July 2023. Serge Aurier, Gonzalo Montiel and Neco Williams were competition on the right of defence — and Aina spent much of his debut season on the left.Aina and Williams, both naturally right-footed, have since swapped duties on each flank more than once. But, generally, they have established themselves as the clear first-choice full-back options.Forest were delighted to agree a new long-term contract with Williams, which will tie him to the club until 2030. Forest also have Nicolo Savona, although Glasner feels the 6ft 4in defender will be an option as a right-sided centre-half, as well as a wing-back, when he returns from a knee injury. Luca Netz, the highly regarded German, provides competition and cover on the left. But now Aina in particular may be fighting to keep his place.Aina has made 84 starts and five substitute appearances for Forest, although his impact was limited by injury last season, when two spells on the sidelines — most significantly a serious hamstring issue that kept him out between September and January — saw him make only 18 Premier League starts.Munoz and Glasner worked together at Palace (Tom Dulat/Getty Images)Aina has remained one of the biggest positive influences in the squad. “Do you want to know what it is like at the training ground? Just follow him on social media. What he shows you is how it is every day,” Williams told The Athletic in a previous interview. “That is how he is; that is just him. He is so bubbly, so friendly.
