Approximately 60 schools were damaged by strong winds in the North West Province.
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) called for the building of climate-resilient infrastructure to become an integral part of planning for the future of education
The NCOP North West Provincial Whip, Sylvia Sithole, remarked on Wednesday that 60 schools were damaged by adverse weather and wind on September 5. Sithole urged the Department of Education to develop practical and workable solutions.
“This is a critical period in the school calendar, particularly as learners prepare to write their final examinations and schools intensify preparations for the examination period. It is therefore essential that every possible measure is put in place to ensure that affected learners are not disadvantaged,” Sithole said.
Sithole said the urgency and effectiveness of the response to the current disaster could prove critical in determining whether affected schools can complete the academic year. Sithole further emphasised that interventions should not adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, but should instead take into account the unique needs, circumstances and extent of damage experienced by each affected school.
