A weather warning has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) announced the closure of all schools in the Eden and Central Karoo districts on Wednesday and Thursday due to the weather warning.
This comes after the South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a severe Level 8 weather warning for parts of the Western Cape as a heavy cut-off low-pressure system makes landfall, bringing torrential rain and flooding risks from Wednesday to Thursday.
According to the MEC for Education, David Maynier, the decision to close schools is in the interest of learner and teacher safety after a consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.
“A decision has been taken to close schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, and Thursday, June 4, 2026. All public ordinary and special needs schools in Eden and Central Karoo Education District are affected by the closure, which is due to the heavy rainfall warnings for the area,” Maynier said.
