A Russian drone struck a shopping center in central Sumy on Wednesday evening, Sept. 9, killing a 21-year-old man and woman and injuring at least 20 people, Ukrainian officials said. Russia strikes during evening rush The attack hit the Manufaktura shopping center near the center of Sumy at around 8 p.m., as residents were returning home from work and shopping. Sumy City Military Administration chief Serhii Kryvosheienko said Russia struck at a time when large numbers of civilians were in the area. The drone damaged the shopping center and vehicles in its parking lot, sparking a fire. Police, rescuers and medical teams worked at the scene while authorities warned of the possibility of another Russian strike. Among the wounded were three girls aged 15 to 16. Hryhorov said two men and one woman were in serious condition, while another woman was in extremely serious condition. Sumy under repeated Russian attack Sumy and the surrounding oblast, which border Russia, have faced sustained Russian drone, missile and artillery attacks. The shopping center strike came a day after Russia attacked a passenger train in Sumy Oblast. Two women, aged 60 and 79, later died from injuries suffered in that strike. The attacks add to the growing toll on Ukrainian civilians. Under international humanitarian law, intentionally targeting civilians or civilian objects constitutes a war crime.
