Panos Mitrou, Senior Vice President – Shipping Strategy at Lloyd’s Register, highlighted the intense activity building up ahead of a new shipbuilding cycle following his participation in the SMM 2026 international trade fair in Hamburg.As he pointed out, an unprecedented race is underway to secure shipyard slots, engines and critical components in time to support the new shipbuilding supercycle. At the same time, he stressed that more work is needed to ensure the availability of alternative fuels.Particular emphasis is also being placed on energy-efficiency technologies, with onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) solutions and nuclear propulsion gradually gaining ground. During SMM, new reports were also presented, along with a series of Approvals in Principle (AiPs) for ship designs using alternative fuels.
