A JMPD officer is in jail after allegedly disappearing with R1.5 million he seized during a roadside stop.

The officer stopped a motorist on 12 August 2023 and searched the vehicle, reportedly on suspicion of money laundering. JMPD said he found the cash in a bag and told the motorist to follow him to Johannesburg Central SAPS, but never arrived. He allegedly changed direction and drove off with the money.

According to JMPD, the officer instructed the motorist to follow him to Johannesburg Central SAPS. However, he never made it to the police station. He diverted from the route and disappeared with the cash.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that the officer was subsequently arrested for corruption and immediately suspended.

“The officer was found guilty in court and is currently incarcerated, serving a criminal sentence,” Fihla said.
