A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer is behind bars after a roadside operation involving R1.5 million in cash ended with his arrest for corruption.

The incident happened on August 12, 2023, when the officer stopped a motorist and searched the vehicle on suspicion of money laundering. He allegedly found a bag containing R1.5 million and confiscated the cash.

According to JMPD, the officer instructed the motorist to follow him to Johannesburg Central SAPS. However, he never made it to the police station. He diverted from the route and disappeared with the cash.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that the officer was subsequently arrested for corruption and immediately suspended.

“The officer was found guilty in court and is currently incarcerated, serving a criminal sentence,” Fihla said.
