A 42-year-old police sergeant stationed at the Lebombo Port of Entry has been arrested by the Hawks on allegations of corruption after he was allegedly caught accepting an R80,000 gratification payment during a covert operation.

A 42-year-old police sergeant stationed at the Lebombo Port of Entry has been arrested on allegations of corruption following a targeted Hawks operation conducted on June 8.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said the arrest followed information received from Crime Intelligence regarding alleged criminal activities at the border post.

According to investigators, criminal syndicates involved in vehicle theft, hijackings and vehicle insurance fraud were allegedly working with corrupt law enforcement officials to facilitate the movement of stolen and fraudulently obtained vehicles from South Africa into Mozambique.

The investigation revealed that officials allegedly received financial rewards, with payments varying according to the type of vehicle allowed to cross the border without being intercepted.
