It happened on his first pitch of the third inning Tuesday — a 100.0 mph smoke ball to Seiya Suzuki. It was electric. It was also history, because it was Jacob Misiorowski’s 1,000th pitch of the season registered at 100 mph or faster.You don’t even need to wonder: Has anyone else ever done this? Of course, nobody has ever done this — except the Milwaukee Brewers’ 24-year-old rocket launcher. In Statcast’s pitch-tracking era, which began in 2008, no other starting pitcher has even thrown 1,000 pitches at 100 mph in a whole career, let alone one season.Only three men (all relief pitchers) have ever even gotten halfway there, by firing at least 500 triple-digit fastballs in one season: Aroldis Chapman (twice, in 2015 and 16), Mason Miller (2024) and Jordan Hicks (2018).In fact, no team had ever touched 100 mph (or more) 1,000 times in a season — until these Brewers got there last month. Before this, the most 100 mph fastballs by any team was 673, by the 2018 Cardinals — and all 673 of those were thrown by Hicks in relief.So what we are witnessing, when the Brewers’ 6-foot-7 dominator heads for the mound every start, is a season that will live on in baseball lore:• Nine times, Misiorowski has thrown at least 50 pitches at 100 or faster in a game. All the other pitchers who have started a game in the pitch-tracking era have combined for zero games like that.• He is also up to 14 starts with at least 40 pitches at 100 or faster and 18 starts with at least 30 pitches in triple digits. Statcast recorded him throwing 42 at 100 or greater in Tuesday’s 4-3 win versus the Chicago Cubs in Milwaukee, giving him 1,010 triple-digit specials this season.• And the Miz is now averaging 37 pitches per start at 100 or swifter. Only one other pitcher in the pitch-tracking era has had any starts with at least 37 pitches at 100 or greater. That’s injured Reds starter Hunter Greene, who has done it four times.So is it safe to say Misiorowski is the hardest-throwing pitcher ever? The Nolan Ryan Fan Club might disagree, but even Ryan isn’t staking a claim to that honor. In a June interview with The Athletic, he called Misiorowski “special.”“My observation of him is, I thought he had the best arm I’ve seen in baseball since I don’t know since when,” Ryan said. “I really think he has a gift there.“It’s a gift that he has, and it’s special, no doubt about it, because you just don’t see many arms like it.”
