District Collector K. Elambahavath launched the Tamil Nadu Green School scheme at the government higher secondary school at Sandhaithanapatti in Nangavalli Panchayat union in Salem on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) and inspected the saplings planted and solar panels installed under the scheme.The Collector said awareness on protecting the environment should start at the school level, and the Green School scheme aims to do that. “A green school is not just a green campus. It is an initiative to promote green thinking among students and encourage a responsible lifestyle,” he said, and added that the main objective is to enable students to understand the future associated with nature and to travel towards it.Explaining the facilities established as part of the scheme, the Collector said that five kW solar panels worth ₹13 lakh have been installed in the school on behalf of the Energy Department. A rainwater harvesting system and a borewell have been implemented. “Through this, students will learn the importance of utilising renewable energy, factors that play a key role in conserving water resources, and the need to save rainwater and protect groundwater,” the Collector added.Furthermore, students will be encouraged to grow plants and trees in their house. On behalf of the Horticulture Department, a vegetable garden on 2,500 sq. ft., and a kitchen garden have been set up, helping students to connect directly with organic farming. It also provides an opportunity for students to learn how food is cultivated and create a habit of turning waste into a resource, he added.Chief Educational Officer A.
