Salem District Collector K. Elambahavath inaugurated the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme awareness week here on Tuesday (June 23, 2026).In a function held at the Salem Collectorate, the Collector administered the BBBP scheme awareness pledge to the officials. He also inaugurated a signature campaign. Speaking at the function, the Collector said the BBBP awareness week is celebrated from June 23 to June 27 to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR), to promote the education and empowerment of the girl child, to ensure the education and skill development and to identify the sports skills among girl children.In the district, a series of awareness programmes will be conducted through the scheme. School students are appointed as ambassadors of the scheme who will be trained to create awareness on educating the girl child, and their importance in schools and houses.Awareness will be given to women through anganwadi and health workers, especially in areas where the female birth rate is reduced. Likewise, to prevent the discontinuation of studies and to increase opting for higher education, various sports competitions are being conducted, the Collector added.Mentioning that the Salem Collectorate has more women officials working under various departments, the Collector advised parents to provide equal opportunity for girl children.
