UniCredit, one of the largest banking groups in Italy, has taken a minority stake in VC Trade, a German digital lending markets platform, as the lender moves to strengthen its digital infrastructure for debt capital markets.

The deal includes the option for UniCredit to increase its ownership over time and is expected to help VC Trade expand internationally. VC Trade provides a digital marketplace and infrastructure connecting banks, issuers and institutional investors across Europe for transactions including syndicated loans and Schuldscheine.

UniCredit said it intends to deploy the fintech’s infrastructure across its European network as part of efforts to accelerate its digital assets strategy, lower costs and improve efficiency. The investment adds to initiatives such as DealSync and UniCredit’s investment in blockchain-based financing specialist BlockInvest.
