Eskom is exploring new ways to protect revenue as electricity sales decline, with customers increasingly turning to solar, self-generation and alternative power sources to reduce reliance

South Africans who invested in solar power to escape rising Eskom bills could soon find themselves paying the utility anyway.

Eskom recently announced a profit of R30 billion, more than double the previous year’s figure. However, it also raised concerns about falling power sales, citing the growing use of alternative sources of electricity and customers generating their own power.

"Eskom’s sales volumes have declined by around 2% annually over the past decade, driven by depressed economic conditions, embedded self-generation, energy efficiency gains, wheeling and reduced demand from energy-intensive industries."

Now, Eskom is looking beyond simply selling more kilowatt-hours to protect its revenue.
