Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has chosen to take on two former prime ministers, Antonis Samaras and Alexis Tsipras, as he seeks to shape the political landscape ahead of a long preelection period.
His appearance at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair was its starting point, combining warnings about instability with attacks on former leaders. Mitsotakis portrayed a New Democracy majority as the only route to avoiding ungovernability, saying a coalition government would not currently be possible.
“Today there is no visible possibility of a coalition government on the horizon,” Mitsotakis said. He attributed that situation not to New Democracy but to other parties that have ruled out cooperation with it.
Mitsotakis also warned voters against using the election to send a protest message. “There will be citizens who may see election day as an opportunity to send a ‘message of protest.’ They should know that with such a stance, on Monday there may be no one to receive it,” he said.
On the prospect of no government being formed after the election, Mitsotakis said a caretaker administration might not be the best option during what he described as a difficult international situation.
