Greece is to sign an agreement with Italy on Tuesday for the acquisition of two Italian FREMM-class frigates, the Defense Ministry in Athens has said.
The deal is part of a broader naval buildup that will give the Hellenic Navy at least 13 major surface combatants by 2030.
The first frigate, Carlo Bergamini, is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2028, followed by Virginio Fasan in the first half of 2029.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias will travel to Rome, where he will hold talks with his Italian counterpart, Guido Crosetto, focusing on international and regional security developments, European defense, the strategic situation in the Mediterranean and Western Balkans, and strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.
The implementing agreement for the frigates follows a memorandum of understanding signed by Dendias and Crosetto in September 2025.
