Greece and Italy are expected to sign an agreement in Rome on September 8, advancing Athens’ acquisition of two FREMM frigates, the Greek Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and his Italian counterpart, Guido Crosetto, are expected to attend the signing, along with the two countries’ navy chiefs.
The agreement will finalize the legal, financial and technical terms for the purchase of the Carlo Bergamini and Virginio Fasan frigates. The first is scheduled to be transferred to the Greek Navy in the first half of 2028 and the second the following year.
The deal also covers operational support and participation by Greek shipyards in maintenance work and the installation of new systems.
The ministry said the acquisition, combined with four FDI frigates and upgrades to Greece’s MEKO-class vessels, would significantly strengthen the navy’s capabilities in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
