Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says the province must rethink school capacity after more than 805,000 Grade 1 and 8 applications were received for 2027.
Gauteng recorded 805 688 Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications for 2027, putting further pressure on school capacity across the province.
The applications were submitted by 357,468 parents and guardians on behalf of 346 877 learners before the Gauteng Department of Education’s Online Admissions System closed at midnight on Friday, 4 September.
The total included 169 396 Grade 1 applications and 177 481 Grade 8 applications.
Education MEC Lebogang Maile said yesterday the figures highlighted both the demand for public education and the concentration of applications around particular schools and geographical areas.
