Panetolikos is the unlikely sole leader of the Super League after three rounds of games, as it maintains a perfect record while the main title challengers have dropped points, and Panathinaikos – that beat PAOK – has played a game less.
Coached by former Ajax striker Giannis Anastasiou, Panetolikos has made it three-out-of-three with a 2-0 road win against last season’s surprise package Levadiakos on Sunday, both goals coming from substitute Kwadwo Opoku in the last 15 minutes of the game at Livadia.
The weekend was marked by two major games. The first one was on Saturday, with Olympiakos drawing 1-1 at Volos, a match overshadowed by the serious injury to last season’s top scorer Ayoub El Kaabi. His clash with the Volos goalkeeper led to a penalty for Olympiakos, but more importantly meant the Reds have lost their main striker for six to seven months.
Jota Silva converted the penalty, but Volos equalized 14 minutes from time with Maximiliano Comba leaving Olympiakos in joint second, two points behind Panetolikos, along with AEK.
The champion thrashed visiting Aris 5-0 on Saturday, three days before its premiere at the Champions League group stage against LASK Linz. Barnabas Varga scored a brace, followed by goals from Razvan Marin, Aboubakary Koita and Zini.
