A new 600-bed super-speciality block at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi, under construction since 2024, is nearing completion, and will be ready for inauguration soon, the authorities have said.“Most of the work, including the laying of medical gas pipelines, has been completed. We hope to finish the pending electrical wiring within the next few weeks,” a senior Public Works Department official told The Hindu.The ground plus six floor block was allocated ₹110 crore by the previous government. It is set in an area of 2,10,000 sq. ft. near the parking area close to the Department of Orthopaedics in the hospital’s Puthur premises.The new facility will function as a broad speciality block with medicine, surgery, dermatology departments and centralised blood bank.The old and new wings will reportedly be inter-linked to serve patients more efficiently.Hospital sources said a request for a suitable inauguration date had been presented to the higher authorities. “We are hoping to launch the new block at the earliest as the number of patients being referred to MGMGH has increased significantly in the past few years,” a senior hospital official said.The new addition would help ease the congestion faced in the existing wings of the hospital, which receives approximately 7,000 patients daily. At present, the hospital has 1,832 beds, of which 589 are in the super-speciality block inaugurated by former Chief Minister Jayalalitha in 2016. The maternity ward has around 500 beds.
