Installation work of medical equipment is in full swing at the newly built multi-speciality block at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital, which is expected to be inaugurated soon.The 650-bed facility was constructed at an outlay of ₹136.35 is expected to significantly strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised medical care . Of the total project cost around ₹16 crore has been allocated for procurement of hi-tech diagnostic and surgical equipment, while the remaining amount was used for civil works. The project is jointly funded by union government and State government in the ratio 60:40The new block is being equipped with advanced medical facilities to cater to a growing number of patients from Thoothukudi and neighbouring districts. The additional block is expected to ease congestion in existing wards and enhance the hospital’s ability to provide specialised treatment and diagnostic services.In January 2026, Additional Health Secretary S. Uma inspected the new facility built in Thoothukudi and exhorted the Public Works Department to expedite the completion of works and installation of medical equipment.According to a hospital administration official, the installation of key equipment such as CT scan, digital X-ray,ultra sound machines has already been completed, with the installation and calibration of other equipment currently underway.
