Surgeries have commenced at the newly set up Mother and Child Super Speciality Block of the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur, bringing advanced and free treatment facilities for pregnant women, newborns and children under one roof. Two surgeries were performed on the first day on Thursday.Built at a cost of ₹127 crore with 600 beds, the Dr. Kanuri–GMCANA Mother and Child Care Super Speciality Block is equipped with facilities comparable to corporate hospitals. While the GMCANA contributed ₹100 crore for the construction, the State government spent ₹27 crore on medical equipment and advanced machines.Seven operation theatres dedicated to complex maternal and gynaecological surgeries have been made operational, while three additional theatres are ready for infant and paediatric procedures.Among the major highlights are Total Body Cooling machines for newborns suffering oxygen deprivation at birth and 10 high-frequency ventilators for emergency neonatal care. A dedicated neonatal intensive care unit adjacent to labour rooms has also been set up for immediate treatment of newborns.GGH Superintendent Dr. S.S.V. Ramana said the hospital would gradually scale up surgeries based on demand, while specialised wards for high-risk pregnancies and obstetric ICU care are already functional.
