A 49-year-old patient was found dead in the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur on Saturday morning (May 30, 2026), triggering concern among patients and attendants at the hospital.The deceased has been identified as Chennamsetti Srinivas, a native of Undi village in West Godavari district and a resident of Kapulapeta in Undi mandal. According to hospital records, Srinivas, a mason by profession, had been undergoing treatment at GGH since May 23 after being admitted with multiple health complications.Hospital sources said the patient had reportedly gone for morning ablutions and was later found lying injured on the ground floor of the building. The reasons behind this extreme step have yet to be ascertained.According to the official death summary issued by GGH authorities, Srinivas was admitted to the casualty wing on May 23 and later transferred to Ward No. 329. He had approached the hospital with complaints of yellowish discolouration of the eyes for 20 days, shortness of breath for 10 days, blood in sputum for 20 days, and swelling in both lower limbs for three days.Doctors had provisionally diagnosed him with Chronic Alcoholic Liver Disease (CLD) with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and bilateral pleural effusion, which was more severe on the right side.GGH Superintendent Dr. SSV Ramana told The Hindu that he remained conscious, coherent, and clinically stable and was eating regularly. A pleural tap procedure was performed, and specialist consultations with the gastroenterology and pulmonology departments were arranged.Hospital officials said the patient had shown signs of improvement during the six-day course of treatment. However, attendants were reportedly not continuously present with him from the third day of admission.At around 7 a.m. on Saturday (May 30, 2026), Srinivas reportedly left for the washroom on his own without informing the duty staff, as no attendant was present beside him. Shortly afterwards, hospital personnel were alerted by an unidentified attendant that the patient was lying injured on the ground floor of the building.Duty staff and doctors rushed to the spot and shifted him to the casualty ward. He was declared brought dead by emergency medicine residents and the Chief Medical Officer at 7:46 a.m., according to hospital authorities.Family sources said Srinivas is survived by two sons, while his wife had passed away earlier.Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
