A committee constituted to examine the prevailing fare structure and operating costs of autorickshaws has recommended increase in auto fares.

Autorickshaw fares are likely to see upward revision after over a decade as the Telangana Transport Department has proposed a hike. The minimum fare recommended to be increased is from ₹20 to ₹30 and the fare for every subsequent kilometre from ₹11 to ₹14.The proposal, submitted to the State government, is based on the recommendations of a committee constituted to examine the prevailing fare structure and operating costs of autos. The committee has also recommended increasing the waiting charges from ₹0.50 to ₹0.75 per minute and the luggage charge from ₹0.25 to ₹0.50 per package. The existing provision of charging one-and-a-half times the normal fare for journeys between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. has been retained.The existing fares were fixed in 2014 and have remained unchanged for more than 12 years. The committee cited increases in vehicle acquisition and financing costs, fuel prices, insurance, repairs and maintenance, as well as the impact of urban congestion and rising household expenditure on drivers, to justify the revision.The committee took into consideration the fare structures in States like Kerala which has a minimum fare of ₹30, Delhi where the minimum fare is also ₹30, Karnataka which has fixed a minimum fare of ₹36, Maharashtra where auto drivers charge ₹26 as minimum fare, and Tamil Nadu where ₹25 is the minimum fare in Chennai.Other significant autorickshaw operation factors such as vehicle cost, capital investment, financing and depreciation, cost of fuel, maintenance, insurance, cost of living, traffic congestion, and revenue earning kilometres were also examined.
