The Regional Transport Authority (RTA), headed by Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan, has approved a minimum hike in autorickshaw fares in the city from Tuesday. The fare for the initial 1.5 km will increase from ₹35 to ₹40. For every subsequent kilometre, the fare has been fixed at ₹20, up from the prevailing ₹15. The fare applies to a maximum of three passengers.In the order passed on Friday, Mr. Darshan said autorickshaw rates were revised considering the rising costs of fuel, CNG, and spare parts, as well as the interests of commuters. There will be no waiting charge for the first 10 minutes, and ₹5 for every subsequent 15 minutes. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., drivers are allowed to collect 1.5 times the normal fare.Mr. Darshan said the revised fare chart must be clearly displayed in all autorickshaws, and owners should get their fare meters recalibrated at the earliest. He directed the senior regional transport officer and RTA member secretary to prepare the revised fare chart and hand it over to autorickshaw drivers’ and owners’ unions, which will distribute it to drivers and owners. Drivers must collect fares according to the revised rates; any violation will lead to a fine, or the suspension or cancellation of permits, he said.In the order, Mr. Darshan said with the revised fares in Dakshina Kannada are now on a par with those in Udupi and Shivamogga districts. The minimum fare of ₹40 and ₹20 for every subsequent kilometre came into effect in Udupi on September 14, 2022, and in Shivamogga on November 14, 2022. The prevailing minimum fare of ₹35 and ₹17 per subsequent kilometre in Dakshina Kannada had been in effect since October 27, 2022.The minimum fare is ₹36 for 2 km in Bengaluru district, ₹30 for 2 km in Hassan district, ₹25 for 1.5 km in Madikeri, and ₹20 for 2 km in Chikkamagaluru district, Mr. Darshan said.
