In a surprise move, Vodafone has confirmed that it is entering the TV streaming battle with a new device that promises more than 150 channels without the need for an aerial or satellite dish.‌The service is called Vodafone TV and is set to launch in October, giving customers another way to watch live and on-demand content entirely over the internet.‌Much like Sky Stream and Virgin's Stream box, the compact plug-in device will bring a host of popular services together in one place, including Netflix and HBO Max.‌Another bonus is the inclusion of Freely. For those not up to speed, this free-to-view platform lets viewers access over 60 live TV channels without paying for an additional monthly subscription. It also includes features such as pausing live content and showing what's on now and next via an interactive guide.And there’s plenty more on offer from this upcoming set-top box. Vodafone TV supports 4K picture quality, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio, while the box can also be used for gaming, with access to more than 300 games.Because it runs on Google TV, users can also download additional apps through the Google Play Store, turning the device into much more than just a TV box.‌"Vodafone TV is a new entertainment hub that brings live TV, On Demand, streaming, gaming, music, and a huge range of content apps together in one place, without the need for a dish or aerial," Vodafone said.The service will be available from October to both new and existing Vodafone customers with a home broadband, 5G Broadband or mobile plan.Vodafone says this makes it the only UK mobile network operator to bundle TV with both mobile and mobile broadband, giving customers more choice over how they access their entertainment.‌There’s one important detail still missing, though: the price. Vodafone has yet to reveal how much the service will cost, although more details are expected in the coming weeks.The launch puts Vodafone firmly up against Sky, EE, BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, all of which offer their own broadband and TV packages.For consumers, that growing competition can only be good news.
