Several parts of Tiruchi City continue to face irregular drinking water supply, with residents in several localities reporting inadequate pressure and inconsistent supply.According to residents, several areas, particularly tail-end localities, have been receiving drinking water at irregular intervals over the past few weeks. Palpannai, Kattur, Srirangam, Crawford, Edamalaipatti Pudur, Woraiyur, Kallukuzhi, Khajamalai, Varaganeri, Sethuraman Pillai Colony, and Sangiliandapuram are among the affected areas.Residents said that even when water is supplied, the pressure is often too low to fill household storage tanks adequately. “The tank hardly gets filled, and the water supply is very inadequate,” said a resident of Palpannai.Official sources said the city’s daily drinking water requirement is around 170 million litres a day (MLD). The Cauvery and Kollidam rivers have nine major sources which draw groundwater to supply about 130 overhead water tanks across the city.Earlier, only around 135 MLD was being obtained through borewells. With the release of water from the Mettur Dam, officials expect water availability to improve and supply to be gradually regularised.We had earlier planned to provide drinking water on alternate days in view of the reduced availability. With inadequate rainfall, the groundwater table has not received sufficient replenishment, an official said.In the Srirangam area, residents are currently being provided drinking water only once a day. Residents in several other localities have also complained about discoloured and poor-quality water being supplied to their households.Corporation officials said measures, including periodic maintenance of water pumps and pipelines and closer monitoring of supply systems, have been undertaken to strengthen the city’s water-supply infrastructure.The civic body has instructed workers to identify and rectify damaged pipelines at the earliest to prevent leakages and interruptions in supply.
