The US labor market just delivered a report that looks a lot healthier than the headline payroll number suggests. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its August 2026 Employment Situation report on September 4, and while the nonfarm payroll gain of 162,000 was modest, the household survey told a much more interesting story: full-time employment surged by 735,000, while part-time jobs fell by 223,000.
The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.
The numbers beneath the numbers
The establishment survey showed that 162,000 jobs were added in August. The household survey painted a more dynamic picture: total employment rose by 569,000 month-over-month.
The most telling data point might be involuntary part-time employment, which dropped by 414,000 to reach 4.39 million. These are people who wanted full-time work but could only find part-time hours.
