Nvidia is making its boldest move yet beyond silicon. The company is acquiring Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform that has become something of a GitHub for machine learning models, for roughly $13 billion. The deal would give Nvidia control over one of the most important developer ecosystems in artificial intelligence, at a moment when its market capitalization sits near $5.5 trillion.
That last number deserves a beat. Nvidia is now worth more than the GDP of Japan. And it’s spending what amounts to pocket change, roughly 0.24% of its market value, to lock down a software layer that could make its hardware dominance even stickier.
The logic behind buying Hugging Face
Hugging Face hosts hundreds of thousands of AI models and datasets, functioning as the central hub where researchers and engineers collaborate on machine learning projects.
The acquisition ranks among Nvidia’s largest transactions ever, and it signals a strategic pivot. CEO Jensen Huang has spent years positioning the company as more than a chipmaker, but this deal makes that ambition concrete.
