Sale of onions at ₹35 per kg began at fair price shops in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and other districts on Thursday.Minister for Food and Civil Supplies P. Venkataramanan had announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly that in view of the rise in onion prices, the State government had decided to procure 1,000 metric tonnes of onions in the first phase and distribute them to the ration card holders in urban areas through fair price shops at ₹35 per kg.The main objective was to control the price rise and benefit various sections of society. The increase in onion prices was due to a shortage in supply due to weather conditions in the major onion-producing StatesAccordingly, the sale of onions began at ration shops in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and other districts. Onions were sold at ₹35 per kg, with a limit of one kg per ration card. Instructions had been issued to sell one kg of onions per ration card so that the commodity reached a large number of consumers.Welcoming the decision taken by the State government to sell onions at ₹35 per kg at the fair price shops, the public said that in the open market, onions were currently sold at ₹50 to ₹60. Onions were essential for cooking, they said. Authorities inspected the onion sales at the fair price shops.Onions were procured through the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).
